Ponderings of Grace - Feast of the Guardian Angel

Oh Angel of God, my guardian dear.
To whom God's love entrusts me here.
Ever this day be at my side, to light,
to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Like many children who attended Catholic elementary school in the 60's and 70's, my day ended with the Act of Contrition and the Guardian Angel Prayer. While I considered the Act of Contrition a bit frightening, I took great comfort in the image of my guardian angel wrapping me in her warm embrace. I will be forever grateful to Sister Regina Muriel SSJ, my 1st and 2nd grade teacher, for introducing me to this special friend.

Throughout the years, angels have remained a constant presence in my life, especially during the 10 years I faithfully watched Touched by an Angel on Sunday night. I was wholly taken up with the angels and their simple, yet profound message, I am an angel sent by God.

I am an angel sent by God ...I am grateful beyond measure that angels journey with me. And just like the young Catholic school girl I once was, I am aware of, and feel their presence each day.

On this Feast of the Guardian Angel, may we reflect on the words of Psalm 91:11 - For God will command the angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

I am an angel sent by God. Can we rest in knowing God's angels journey with us? Can we lean into our special companions, knowing that the Holy One, whose love is greater than we can wrap our minds around, has gifted them to us?

This day, may we take a few moments to ponder the wonderful image that springs forth from Sara Thomsen's song, Holy Angels :

You are held by holy angels
Holy angels all around you.
Hush, now, sleep child
Sing the holy angels
We are holding you.
You can rest.

Morning will come, child.
The dawn will break through the darkness.
We are holding you
through the light of the newborn day.
