Ponderings of Grace ~ Feast of the Visitation of Mary

As we reflect upon this encounter between two spirit-filled women, Mary becomes the Evangelist par excellence.  Notice, the Life within Mary impels her to go in haste to be of service to her beloved kinswoman rather than be caught up in her own motherhood, even though he is the long-awaited Messiah.  Once there, Elizabeth affirms Mary for her deep belief in what was spoken to her by her God and Mary bursts forth in praise of God!  Yes, Mary deflects Elizabeth’s praise from herself in order to glorify God who has done great things for her (Luke 1: 39-56).

If we are to fulfill our Baptismal call to share the life and message of Jesus, Mary shows us the way.  First, we must open ourselves to the inpouring of the Spirit.  At the Spirit’s urging, we must seek and reach out to others.  Most importantly, we must proclaim the marvelous things God does continually in our lives! Following this way, we will, like Mary, bring forth Jesus to others!

Sit a spell in the company of Elizabeth and Mary.

Let the sharing of hearts between these life-giving women touch you.
