Ponderings of Grace ~ Feast of the Epiphany

Today we hear the familiar story, the story depicted in Nativity Scenes around the world, the story of the "magi from the east" who came seeking a King in Bethlehem because they "saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage". Learned people that they were, they knew how to read the stars. They followed the star and it led them to Bethlehem and ultimately to Jesus. Upon finding Jesus they paid him homage and "opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh".

Like the wise and learned people of the Far East of Jesus' time, we too are called to

...read the "signs of the times", even those light years away
...seek Jesus until we find him, even in the most unexpected places
...and once we find Jesus in our midst, we too are called to pay him homage and offer our treasures to him.

So keep your eyes peeled, you never know when a guiding light may appear on the horizon of your life. Your star may lead you on a long trek to distant lands or it may simply lead you across the street. Wherever the star leads you, be sure to recognize Jesus present in those you encounter. Pay them homage and open your hearts to share your treasures.

May the spirit of Melchior, Caspar, and Belthazar be ours this Christmas!
